RAMAPHOSA TO TACKLE GBVF

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation tonight on government’s plans to fight gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Ramaphosa is expected to speak at 7pm today, Tuesday, 29 September, as the country continues to grapple with a string of violent attacks against women and children.

The President will also provide an update on investigations into the murders of women in and around Ekurhuleni.

But the fight against GBVF has also hit home in the North West.

In Ikageng near Potchefstroom, nine-year-old Karabelo “Mmeke” Seripe was found dead in a field after she went missing while on her way to a feeding scheme.

Police have been investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with the case sparking anger in the community.

Residents took to the streets on Friday, 25 September, demanding justice for the child.

The province was again rocked by violence against a woman when a 33-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend in Ikageng on Saturday night.

Police allege the couple were at the suspect’s home when an argument broke out at about 7pm.

The suspect allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the woman before fleeing the scene.

North West police spokesperson Captain Majang Skalkie confirmed that a suspect had been arrested.

“A 29-year-old suspect was arrested on Sunday, 27 September 2026,” said Skalkie.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today facing a murder charge.

Ramaphosa’s address comes as communities across the country continue to demand stronger action against violence targeting women and children.
