Taung set for agro-processing boost as new lucerne packhouse is unveiled

Taung in the North West is set for an agricultural boost with the launch of a new lucerne value-addition packhouse aimed at expanding agro-processing and creating opportunities for local farmers.

The Jantjies Boerdery Packhouse Project will be launched on Monday by the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development Mzwanele Nyhontso is expected to officiate at the launch, alongside Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nokuzola Capa, North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi and Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Madoda Sambatha.

Departmental spokesperson Emelda Setlhako said in statement that the project is aimed at helping farmers move beyond primary production and participate in more stages of the agricultural value chain.

The farmer-led Jantjies Boerdery produces, processes, packages and distributes lucerne pellets for the livestock feed market.

Setlhako said the facility will provide an outlet for lucerne producers in and around Taung, while creating opportunities for job creation and greater participation in the agricultural value chain.

“The department has supported the initiative with lucerne harvesting machinery, processing and value-addition equipment, as well as packaging materials.The project is expected to contribute to rural industrialisation, food security and economic growth through opportunities in production, processing, packaging and distribution, “she said.

She add that the department’s support is intended to strengthen agricultural production and agro-processing in the Greater Taung Local Municipality.

The department will also launch the Hemp Hub at Taung Agricultural College.

The hub will assist hemp producers with permit applications, training and skills development, access to markets and other support services.

The launch is scheduled for 9am at Taung Agricultural College, followed by a tour of the Jantjies Boerdery Packhouse at Stand 43, NWDC Small Industries.

The tour will include demonstrations of lucerne harvesting, handling, processing, pellet production and packaging.
