A 35-year-old North West man accused of fatally stabbing an ANC ward councillor in Matlosana has briefly appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court in the North West.

Thapelo Apache Thejane appeared in court on Monday, 16 February 2026, in connection with the murder of 46-year-old councillor Molefi Sello.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) North West spokesperson Vuyi Gunya, the matter was postponed to 23 February 2026 for address verification and profiling. Thejane faces a charge of murder.

The accused allegedly handed himself over to police over the weekend following the fatal stabbing, which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning in Klerksdorp.

Provincial police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh previously said officers responded to a complaint at a tavern in the Klerksdorp Central Business District along Voortrekker Street.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found the body of a 46-year-old man lying on the ground with a stab wound to the neck,” said Myburgh.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were summoned and certified the victim dead at the scene.

Myburgh added that a multidisciplinary team — including members of the Potchefstroom Anti-Gang Investigation Unit, Klerksdorp Detectives and the Provincial Organised Crime Unit — was activated immediately after the incident.

Preliminary investigations suggest the councillor was allegedly stabbed during an argument believed to be linked to a dispute over a girlfriend.

The case continues.
