An off-duty North West police detective, Sergeant Christoffer Lechuti (47), was stabbed to death during an altercation at a Christiana tavern on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh said Lechuti, who was attached to the Christiana Detective Unit, was with a family member when two men allegedly kicked over his beer, sparking a verbal confrontation. Myburgh said one of the suspects is alleged to have stabbed him in the chest with a sharp object.

He was rushed to a local clinic, where he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Two suspects, aged 46 and 32, were arrested within hours following the activation of the SAPS 72-hour plan.

“They are expected to appear in the Christiana Magistrates’ Court on Monday on a charge of murder. The case will be investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation,” she said.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Provincial Police Commissioner Ryno Naidoo described the killing as a serious blow to the police service and commended detectives for the swift arrests.

Police have urged the public to report crime via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS App.
