#BreakingNews: ANC instructs NW government to intervene in Matlosana

Staff Writer / Sun, 8 February 2026

The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West has directed its deployees in the provincial government to invoke Section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution to place the City of Matlosana Local Municipality under provincial administration.

The move allows the provincial government to assume executive powers after the municipality failed to meet its constitutional and legislative obligations.

ANC Provincial Secretary Louis Diremelo said the intervention was unavoidable.

“This intervention is both politically and administratively necessary to restore governance and service delivery in Matlosana,” Diremelo said.

An intervention team will be appointed to implement findings of a Section 106 investigation in terms of the Municipal Systems Act. The ANC said the findings will be implemented without fear or favour.

The decision follows a meeting between the ANC’s provincial leadership and its Matlosana caucus on Sunday and forms part of resolutions taken at a recent Extended Provincial Executive Committee Lekgotla.

The ANC said it will exercise political oversight to ensure the intervention stabilises the municipality and restores service delivery.
