Five people were killed and another five critically injured after a Toyota Avanza overturned on the R34, about 25 kilometres before Kroonstad from the Welkom direction, on Saturday evening.
The crash occurred at approximately 19:20. Emergency medical services(EMS)arrived on the scene and declared five occupants dead on arrival, while the remaining five victims were found to be critically injured.
The injured were stabilised at the scene before being transported to Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad for urgent medical treatment.
The Free State EMS spokesperson Sipho Towa said the scene required extensive management due to the severity of the crash.
“Emergency services and law enforcement are currently on the scene. Scene management is expected to continue for an extended period due to the high-profile nature of the incident,” said Towa.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
