Three people were killed in a fatal head-on collision on the N3 between Warden and Villiers on Friday, prompting emergency services to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution in the area.
Sipho Towa, spokesperson for Free State Emergency Medical Services, said the crash involved a light motor vehicle (LMV) and a heavy motor vehicle (HMV). “Three passengers were declared dead at the scene. They were still trapped inside the vehicle when emergency responders arrived,” Towa said.
Emergency medical services, rescue teams and law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene, where extrication operations using specialised rescue equipment were underway. Towa confirmed that traffic was moving past the scene, but at a slow pace, as responders worked to manage the situation safely.
Motorists travelling along the N3 were warned to remain on high alert. “Road users are advised not to stop near the scene and to continue moving cautiously. They must follow all instructions from emergency personnel and law enforcement officers,” Towa said.
Authorities also cautioned drivers to be vigilant for emergency vehicles and debris on the road while travelling through the area. The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed and investigations are expected to follow.
Road users were urged to prioritise safety and adhere to traffic regulations as emergency operations continue on one of the country’s busiest highways.
