Fatal accident claims life of pedestrian on R26 in FS

A fatal accident involving pedestrians has led to the closure of the R26 road between Zastron and Van Stadensrus in the Free State after a vehicle struck two pedestrians and fled the scene.

According to Free State Road Incident Management Systems (RIMS) spokesperson, Sipho Towa, a vehicle hit and ran over two pedestrians on the R26. The driver failed to stop following the incident.

Towa said one female pedestrian was declared dead at the scene, while a male pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was transported for urgent medical care.

“The R26 has been totally closed to traffic due to the presence of human remains on the roadway. Emergency services responded promptly, while crime scene investigators and the Forensic Pathology Services were dispatched to the scene to conduct further investigations, ” he said

Towa added that motorists are urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes, including the R700 and R709. Road users are also advised to delay travel where possible, as the road is expected to remain closed for several hours.

Earlier this afternoon an8tyer fatal accident was reported in the Free State. A single-vehicle accident occurred on the R731 between Clarens and Fouriesburg at approximately 17:40 on Friday, 19 December 2025. The vehicle reportedly lost control before overturning on the roadway.

The driver was declared dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
