A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in Hoopstad in Tswelopele Local Municipality after she allegedly stabbed her 41-year-old boyfriend to death with a broken beer bottle during an argument at a local tavern in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to the Free State police spokesperson, Palesa Thabana, officers were patrolling the Tikwana area at around 01:10 on Saturday, 22 November 2025, when they were alerted to a stabbing incident at a nearby tavern.
Thabana said on arrival, officers found the victim a foreign national man lying in a pool of blood near the gate, with the alleged suspect kneeling beside him attempting to stop the bleeding.
Emergency medical services were summoned, but the man was declared dead on the scene.
Thabana said preliminary information indicates the couple had argued inside the tavern before stepping outside, where the confrontation turned physical. It is alleged the woman broke a beer bottle and stabbed the victim above his left shoulder.
The broken bottle was seized as evidence.
“The woman was arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in the Hoopstad Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 November 2025, on a charge of murder,” she said.
