The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West has dismissed social media reports claiming that a Matlosana Local Municipality councillor(Cllr) survived an assassination attempt.

According to provincial police , the information circulating online about Farouk Tagaree, the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) chairperson at the Matlosana Local Municipality, is false and misleading.

Police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh said officers were called to a scene in Manzil Park in Klerksdorp on Friday, 13 March 2026, after an alleged attempted hijacking involving a neighbour of the councillor.

During the incident, shots were fired and two vehicles belonging to neighbours were damaged. However, no injuries were reported.

Myburgh said the councillor was not at the scene when the incident happened.

“Police were summoned to the area after reports of an attempted hijacking. Shots were fired and two vehicles belonging to neighbours were damaged. Fortunately, no one was injured and the councillor was not present at the scene,” she said.

SAPS provincial management in North West Province urged members of the public to avoid sharing unverified information on social media.

Police also warned that action could be taken against people who deliberately spread false or distorted information that may cause panic or confusion in communities.

“Community members are urged to refrain from sharing malicious and misleading information,” Myburgh added.
