The North West police have nabbed six suspects and drugs worth thousands of rand were confiscated during Operation Shanela 2 in Brits on Friday.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Ryno Naidoo, led the unannounced operation targeting drug hotspots in Brits, Hartbeespoortdam, Hebron and Lethlabile.

According to police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, police arrested six foreign national males for possession of suspected illegal substances, including crystal meth, khat and mandrax, with an estimated street value of R31,600.

She said a 39-year-old Nigerian national was also arrested in Brits for possession of an unlicensed firearm, a knife and illegal possession of kat.

At the Hartbeespoortdam flea market, several suspects aged between 36 and 48, along with a 26-year-old Malawian national, were allegedly found selling drugs among other merchandise.

Myburgh said in a separate raid at a suspected drug den in Brits, a 23-year-old man was arrested after police discovered mobile card machines in his possession that he could not account for. He also faces a charge of using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Liquor compliance inspections in the Brits CBD led to fines being issued for violations of liquor legislation. During one inspection, a blank pistol was confiscated after the person found in possession of it failed to provide a lawful explanation.
