A 34-year-old farm worker has been arrested for murder and defeating the ends of justice after police discovered the decomposed body of his 27-year-old girlfriend buried in a shallow grave on a farm outside Bloemfontein in the Free State.
According to the provincial police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, the body was uncovered at a farm in the Kloofeind area along the N8 between Bloemfontein and Petrusburg following crime intelligence investigations.
Covane said the police arrived at the scene from early Monday morning, where the suspect allegedly pointed out the grave.
The victim had been reported missing on 30 January 2026, after last being seen on 17 January.

Police say the suspect initially misled investigators by claiming the woman had left the farm to visit relatives in Bloemspruit.
“A case of murder and defeating the ends of justice has been opened at Parkweg Police Station. The suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 11 February 2026,” Covane said.
Police investigations continue.
