Water supply disruptions hit parts of Potchefstroom

Residents in parts of Potchefstroom are experiencing water supply interruptions following a mechanical breakdown at the Lakeside Water Treatment Plant.

The Potchefstroom-based JB Marks Local Municipality confirmed that Pump 3 at both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the treatment plant suffered a mechanical failure on Monday, 26 January 2026, resulting in reduced water supply to several areas.

The affected areas include the Eesterandjies Reservoirs and all Ikageng Extension communities.

Municipal spokesperson Jeanette Tshite said the municipality’s maintenance team is already working to resolve the issue.

“Our technical team is currently sourcing the necessary spare parts, and repairs are expected to begin on Tuesday morning, 27 January 2026. We understand the inconvenience caused to residents and are working tirelessly to restore normal water supply as soon as possible,” said Tshite.

She added that the municipality has implemented interim measures to assist affected residents.

“Two municipal water tankers have been dispatched to ensure that communities without water receive temporary relief while repairs are underway,” Tshite said.

The municipality has apologised to residents for the disruption and urged affected communities to cooperate while the matter is being attended to.

Residents are encouraged to use water sparingly during this period until full supply is restored.
