Residents of Kanana near Orkney, outside Klerksdorp in the Matlosana Local Municipality in the North West, have been without water for two days following a planned Eskom power outage.
The electricity supply was cut on Wednesday due to scheduled maintenance, leaving the area without power for more than 24 hours until late Thursday afternoon. The outage affected pump-station operations, resulting in water supply interruptions across several extensions.
Scores of residents were seen fetching water from the local Kanana Police Station in Extension 06 along Welumlambo Street.
Meanwhile, the struggling municipality has issued an update regarding the ongoing water and electricity challenges. In a statement, municipal spokesperson Ntswaki Makgetha said the current water supply interruption may result in low water pressure or no water at all in affected areas.
She explained that the disruption was caused by Eskom’s maintenance work, which impacted the municipality’s pump stations.
“At this time, the municipality has not received a completion schedule from Eskom,” Makgetha said.
Affected areas include Kanana Extensions 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15.
The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents.
