The death toll from a tragic scholar transport accident in Vanderbijlpark has risen to 13 learners, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed on Monday.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that another learner has succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident, bringing the total number of fatalities to 13,” said GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona.
The incident occurred earlier on Monday, 19 January 2026. At the time of an earlier update, authorities had confirmed 12 learner deaths. Mabona said all information remains preliminary as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
The department extended its heartfelt condolences to the affected families, learners and school communities, describing the loss as devastating. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this extremely difficult period,” Mabona added.
The GDE said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
