Traffic on the R57 between Sasolburg and Heilbron in the Free State has been brought to a standstill following a fatal multi-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of two people on Tuesday.
Emergency services responded to the scene where two other occupants sustained moderate injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The deceased were declared dead at the scene.
The road has been temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel to attend to the injured and to conduct accident investigations. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes until further notice.
RIMS chairperson and spokesperson Sipho Towa confirmed the incident and urged road users to exercise extreme caution. “We appeal to motorists to remain vigilant at all times, especially on busy routes such as the R57. Drivers must reduce speed, avoid distractions and refrain from reckless overtaking,” said Towa.
Authorities have also reiterated basic road safety measures, including wearing seatbelts at all times and taking regular rest breaks to prevent fatigue-related accidents.
“Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Towa added.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor traffic updates and comply with instructions from law enforcement and emergency services on the scene.
