A bus accident on the R57, about 10 kilometres from Heilbron towards Petrus Steyn in the Free State, claimed the life of one passenger and left several others injured on Saturday.

The incident adds to a string of recent road carnages that have resulted in multiple fatalities across various routes in that province.

According to provincial road incident management spokesperson, Sipho Towa, emergency services responded to the scene where one person was declared dead on arrival.

Towa confirmed that another passenger sustained serious injuries, two suffered moderate injuries, and six others were treated for minor wounds. Twenty-nine passengers escaped without physical injuries but received psychosocial support on site.

“All patients were transported to Tokollo Hospital in Heilbron for further medical attention,” Towa said.

Traffic was disrupted as authorities implemented temporary road closures and traffic control measures. Motorists using the R57 were urged to exercise caution and expect delays while recovery operations continued.

The crash comes as the province experiences a troubling rise in fatal road incidents in recent weeks, with authorities repeatedly calling on motorists to drive safely and adhere to road regulations.
