Activist group blames poor road conditions for deadly N8 crash

By Staff Writer

The Activist and Citizens Forum has expressed deep condolences to families who lost their loved ones in a fatal collision between a bus and a truck on the route between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo in the Free State.

Ten people lost their lives this morning, 15 November 2025, whilst dozens were left injured.

The organisation’s chairperson, Dennis Bloem, described the crash as “horrific” and said the continual loss of life on Free State roads had become unacceptable.

“Almost every week, people are dying on the routes of the Free State,” Bloem said. “One of the biggest reasons for these road accidents is the terrible condition of our roads. Roads are neglected, there is no maintenance, and potholes are everywhere.”

Bloem added that a lack of alternative transport options was worsening the crisis. “Trains are no more; railways are destroyed. People have no other safe way to travel,” he said.

The forum is calling on the government to intervene urgently. “We are calling on the government to do everything possible to bring back trains. We cannot afford to lose more people on our roads,” Bloem said.
