SEWAGE MESS SPARKS OVERSIGHT VISIT

Staff Writer/ Mon, 05 Oct 2026

Klerksdorp residents could be left swimming in sewage if urgent action is not taken to stop the pollution from the city’s broken wastewater treatment plant.

Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Dr Jack Bloom is expected to visit the Klerksdorp Wastewater Treatment Plant on Monday afternoon to inspect the pollution crisis.

According to Bloom, the plant has not been working since 2023.

He said untreated sewage has been flowing from the plant into the Skoonspruit, which joins the Vaal River just a few kilometres downstream.

Bloom said the Department of Water and Sanitation laid criminal charges against the City of Matlosana in February over the matter.

“I will conduct an oversight visit to the Klerksdorp Wastewater Treatment Plant to see the pollution situation for myself,” Bloom said in the media advisory.

The oversight visit is scheduled for 2pm on Monday, 5 October, with media expected to gather outside the gate of the treatment plant.

The visit comes amid ongoing concerns over the impact of untreated sewage on the environment and water resources.

The department has invited members of the media to join Bloom during the inspection.

Meanwhile, Bloom said the purpose of the visit was to assess the pollution situation first-hand.
