RAMAPHOSA: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered urgent action against gender-based violence and femicide after 11 women’s bodies were found in Ekurhuleni since July.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, Ramaphosa said the killings had left South Africans angry and heartbroken.

“The violence inflicted upon the women of South Africa is a source of profound pain and national shame,” he said.

A specialised multidisciplinary investigation has been elevated to national level and includes detectives, Crime Intelligence, forensic specialists, investigative psychologists and digital investigators.

Arrests have already been made in some cases.

A suspect was arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of Ntombifuthi Nxumalo, while two suspects have appeared in court over the killing of Jabulile Ntimba. Another suspect is in custody for the murder of Busisiwe Mahlangu.

Ramaphosa said police had not found evidence linking all the killings to one perpetrator.

“At present, the police have not found evidence establishing that these killings were committed by a single perpetrator. All possibilities remain under investigation,” he said.

He urged the public to report missing people immediately.

“Hours matter. Information matters. A photograph matters. A vehicle registration number matters,” he said.

The President announced four immediate measures, including a national audit of unresolved GBV cases, urgent action to reduce forensic backlogs, women’s safety audits by municipalities and a government plan to tackle alcohol-related violence.

Ramaphosa also called on men and boys to challenge abusive behaviour.

“We cannot police our way out of gender-based violence alone. We cannot arrest our way out of this crisis alone,” he said.

He said government would publish quarterly progress reports, with the first due within 90 days.
