SUSPECT IN R10K ‘BRIBE’ CASE IN COURT

A 42-year-old Nigerian national accused of trying to bribe Hawks investigators to make a drug case against him disappear appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Augustine Chinedu Onah was arrested by the Hawks’ Klerksdorp-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team on Friday, 25 September.

According to the Hawks, Onah allegedly contacted its members and offered R10 000 to have a case involving the possession of drugs withdrawn and closed.

The Hawks then conducted an undercover operation.

The accused allegedly met with the investigators and offered them R3 000, allegedly promising to pay the remaining amount later.

He was arrested during the operation and charged with corruption.

Onah appeared in court on Monday, where the matter was postponed to 5 October for a formal bail application.

Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ndlovu, from the Hawks, confirmed the arrest and court appearance.

“The accused allegedly offered an amount of R10 000 as gratification in exchange for the withdrawal and closure of the case,” said Ndlovu.

The accused remains before the court and the allegations against him have not yet been tested in court.
