A corrupt North West prosecutor who took bribes to feed his greed is now facing an eight-year jail term or a fine of R20 000 after the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court sentenced him.

The sentence comes 10 years after he was nabbed for the crime.

According to provincial Hawks spokesperson Tinyiko Mathebula, the 50-year-old Ronny Songwane was found guilty of corruption by Magistrate Okaeng Mothibi on Monday, 9 February 2026.

Songwane, who was a prosecutor in Vryburg, was arrested shortly after receiving gratification from a complainant in July 2016.

“Reports indicate that Songwane demanded gratification from a shoplifting accused in order to have her case withdrawn. The complainant allegedly paid R600 on her first court appearance and promised to settle the remaining R400 on her next court appearance,” he said.

The complainant reported the matter to the Hawks, and an entrapment operation was set up, which led to the accused’s arrest soon after receiving R400 from the complainant.

Mathebula added that Songwane appeared in court and was granted bail. He made several court appearances until he was convicted of corruption in September 2025.

Songwane was successfully prosecuted by Advocate (Adv) Geo Nel.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Head of the Hawks, Nombuso Khoza, welcomed the sentencing and commended the members who worked on the case.
