The embattled Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Local Municipality in the North West is once again facing water supply challenges, with residents in Kanana and Khuma experiencing interruptions due to technical faults.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 31 January 2026, the municipality said the water supply interruption in Kanana was caused by a mechanical breakdown of pumps at the Kanana Reservoir. The disruption has resulted in low water pressure or a complete lack of water in several areas.
Maintenance work is currently underway and is expected to be completed by 18:00 on Saturday.
Areas affected in Kanana include Extensions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11.
Meanwhile, residents in Khuma are also facing water supply interruptions following a burst pump-line feeding the Khuma Reservoir. The municipality said the complexity of the problem has made it difficult to determine an estimated completion time for repairs.
Affected areas in Khuma include Extensions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
Municipal spokesperson Ntswaki Makgetha said the municipality is attending to both incidents and has put temporary measures in place to assist residents.
“Maintenance teams are working to restore water supply as soon as possible. In the meantime, water tankers will be made available to provide temporary water supply to affected communities,” Makgetha said.
She added that the municipality apologised for the inconvenience caused and urged residents to use the available water sparingly until full supply is restored.
Recently on Tuesday, 27 this week another two in the municipality also faced water supply issues.
This was due to the disruption caused by electricity outages that affected the operation of pumps at the reservoirs.
Affected that were affected by watershedding included: Ext 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 24, and Y block.
