Motorists travelling along the N5 in the Free State have been urged to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains are expected to hit parts of the province over the weekend.
The Free State Road Incident Management System (RIMS) has issued a flood warning for road users travelling over the SandSpruit on the N5, past Paul Roux towards Senekal.
RIMS spokesman Sipho Towa warned that the expected rainfall could lead to flooding along the route, posing serious risks for motorists.
“We are urging all motorists travelling on the N5 over the SandSpruit near Paul Roux to exercise extreme caution as heavy rainfall is expected over the weekend. Flooded roads can be extremely dangerous and motorists should avoid driving through flooded areas where possible,” said Towa.
Authorities have advised drivers to reduce speed, increase following distance and remain alert for possible hydroplaning when travelling on wet roads. Motorists who encounter water on the road are also advised to use low gear and obey all road signs and detours.
Towa further urged the public to report any incidents or flooding along the route so that emergency services can respond swiftly.
Members of the public can report flooding or road incidents to the Free State RIMS WhatsApp line on 066 444 4164 or call the national emergency number 112. Road users are encouraged to provide a location pin, a picture and a brief description when reporting incidents.
