A New Year’s Day tavern altercation in Lethabong near Rustenburg in the North West has left a 38-year-old man dead and resulted in a murder arrest, with police warning that reckless fireworks use continues to endanger lives.
Condemning the incident, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo said, “It is disappointing that despite numerous warnings regarding the careful use of fireworks, some members of the community continue to act recklessly to the extent of even discharging fireworks in a tavern, and a person ends up losing a life.
We send our condolences to the bereaved family and want to assure the public that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served.”
According to police, the violence erupted at about 03:25 on Thursday, 1 January 2026, when patrons at a tavern confronted individuals who had begun igniting fireworks inside the premises.
The confrontation escalated into a fight that spilled outside the tavern, during which the victim was stabbed with a sharp object and died at the scene.
In the aftermath, a group believed to be associated with the deceased allegedly turned on the suspect, who fled on foot. The group then identified a vehicle linked to the suspect that was parked nearby and set it alight.
Police opened two dockets one for murder and another for malicious damage to property.
Investigators say the suspect later approached a police station to seek assistance after learning his vehicle had been torched and fearing to return to the tavern. He was identified as a murder suspect and immediately arrested.
The 45-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court in Tlhabane on Monday, 5 January 2026, on a charge of murder. Police have not ruled out further arrests as investigations continue.
