Police in the North West have launched a manhunt following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery and a fatal shooting that occurred on the R510 between Rustenburg and Northam on Friday afternoon.
The incident happened at about 17:15 near Dikweipi Village outside Mogwase. According to police, security officers were travelling from Northam to Rustenburg in a cash-in-transit van when they noticed a burning vehicle blocking the road. Believing it to be a community protest, they attempted to take a detour through Dikweipi Village.
Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the vehicle came under attack moments later. “As the security officers were about to take the detour, a group of heavily armed suspects opened fire, injuring the driver,” she said.
During the attack, one of the suspects allegedly disarmed a security officer of his 9mm pistol and ammunition before explosives were used to detonate the cash-in-transit vehicle.

Colonel Myburgh said the suspects, believed to have been travelling in a Toyota GD6 and a Toyota Fortuner, were busy loading cash into their vehicles when an unidentified man attempted to join them and collect money from the scene. “The man was allegedly shot dead by one of the suspects,” she said.
No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations into the robbery and murder are continuing.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, has urged members of the public to stay away from crime scenes. He warned against picking up money or tampering with evidence, saying such actions are dangerous and can compromise police investigations.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. Extortion-related incidents can also be reported anonymously on the extortion hotline at 080 091 1011.
