The South African Police Service has revealed that it is edging closer to a breakthrough in the murder investigation of, Marius van der Merwe, with three persons of interest already identified and one brought in for questioning.
According to the National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, the probe is progressing steadily as teams remain on high alert for the suspects believed to be behind the killing.
Masemola said the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), together with the Madlanga Commission, has developed an enhanced security plan aimed at protecting officials and witnesses linked to the commission.
This follows heightened concerns over intimidation and targeted attacks.
“Investigators have expressed confidence that arrests are imminent as intelligence operatives continue to track leads.”
Masemola also urged communities to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and assist law enforcement, especially during the busy festive season.
Meanwhile, General Masemola revealed that the manhunt for the three gun-wielding suspects involved in the murder of 12 people in Saulsville, which left 13 others injured, continues.
He said the police have an idea of what may have led to this incident; however, intelligence officials are still gathering and analysing information that has been received.
“In no time, we are confident that we will find these three suspects. We have registered 12 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder. We have also charged the owner of the room, who is among the injured and currently in hospital, for operating a tavern without a valid liquor licence,” Masemola said.
