DA MP cries foul after being forced out of leadership role

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament (MP)  Karabo Khakhau is crying foul after she was allegedly forced to withdraw from a top leadership race in the DA. She alleged that she was disqualified over a tithe payment dispute.

Khakhau revealed in a letter to party members that she was forced to withdraw from the race for Deputy Chairperson of the party’s Federal Council after the party allegedly refused to give her a letter of good financial standing.

She explained that she mistakenly missed a tithe payment in July last year but later paid the outstanding amount.

“I do not owe the DA a cent,” she said in the letter.

According to Khakhau, she paid R8 500 within 24 hours after receiving a letter of demand for an outstanding tithe of R4 250 and continued paying her monthly tithes.

However, she said the DA Free State leadership still decided not to grant her a letter of good financial standing, which led to her disqualification from the leadership race.

Khakhau said the decision was unfair because other leaders in similar situations were previously allowed to contest leadership positions.

She said her campaign was about strengthening party structures and mobilising voters, especially black, young and female voters.

Despite the setback, Khakhau thanked her supporters and said the fight was not over.

“Together we can still fight from where we are to build structures and win the future,” she said.
