The African National Congress (ANC) is fuming after the grave of struggle hero Robert Sobukwe was vandalised and the party is not holding back.
The ruling party has slammed the shocking act, calling it a racist attack aimed at undermining the legacy of one of the country’s most respected freedom fighters.
ANC Secretary-General (SG) Fikile Mbalula came out guns blazing, making it clear that no amount of hate will erase Sobukwe’s role in the fight against apartheid.
“Robert Sobukwe’s legacy is woven into the fabric of our country. No vandalism by racists who reject our democratic dispensation will ever wipe that away,” said Mbalula.
Sobukwe, a towering figure in the liberation struggle, is remembered for his fearless stance against apartheid and his unwavering belief in freedom for black South Africans.
The ANC also defended government’s decision to rename Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe Town, saying it reflects the country’s commitment to honouring its heroes.
Mbalula didn’t mince his words.
“Those who reject this change expose their racism and their refusal to accept black people and our heroes as equals worthy of recognition.”
The party warned that attacks like this are not just about a grave – but about attempts to rewrite history and silence the legacy of African leaders.
“The persecution must stop. Let President Sobukwe rest in peace while his ideas continue to inspire generations.”
The incident has sparked outrage within ANC ranks, with calls for those responsible to be tracked down and brought to book.
As tensions rise, one thing is clear – the ANC is standing firm.
