The troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s (MMM) General Manager (GM) for Communications, Qondile Khedama, has been suspended following sexual abuse allegations levelled against him.

His suspension follows a dramatic U-turn by City Manager(CM) Sello More after the official was previously cleared by the municipality.

In a media statement issued on Tuesday, More confirmed that the municipality took the suspension decision after receiving a formal report from the Employee Wellness Division.

The move follows a grievance hearing involving organised labour and Khedama, effectively reopening a matter that had earlier been closed by the City Manager’s office without disciplinary action.

The sudden reversal has raised serious questions within municipal and labour circles, with the City failing to clarify what new information or developments prompted the suspension, or why Khedama was initially allowed to remain in office despite the seriousness of the allegations.

The municipality said it takes allegations of sexual harassment and abuse “extremely seriously” and has now appointed an independent team to conduct a full investigation and submit recommendations to the Accounting Officer within strict timelines.

However, the City stressed that Khedama’s suspension does not amount to a finding of guilt, describing it as a precautionary measure intended to ensure a fair, transparent and just process for all parties involved.

As scrutiny intensifies, the Metro reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace, while offering no further explanation for the City Manager’s apparent change of position.
However, Khedama previously lashed at his political detractors and accused them of using the claims against to try and oust him from his position. Khedama also blamed this at the political infighting at the metro. The political infighting amongst ANC members within the Metro are not a new thing.
